Meeting "Civil Society Organizations and Fight against Discrimination in BiH: Current Status and Perspectives” Held in Sarajevo

Address:

Mediacentar Sarajevo, Kolodvorska 3

On 23 September 2014, Analitika organized the first in a series of meetings planned to take place throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina within the USAID and Open Society Fund BiH funded "Equality for All: Civil Society Coalition against Discrimination" Project.

The two-session discussion officially entitled “Civil Society Organizations and Fight against Discrimination in BiH: Current Status and Perspectives”, took place at the premises of the project partner Mediacenter Sarajevo, and gathered 15 representatives from 10 CSOs from Sarajevo.

Slobodanka Dekić of Mediacenter Sarajevo gave a brief overview of the antidiscrimination program and specific activities of all partner organizations, after which Edin Hodžić, Director and Head of the Public Law Program at Center for Social Research Analitika, opened and moderated the discussion. The idea of the meeting was the exchange of ideas, experiences and opinions among the representatives of CSOs dealing with discrimination issues, and defining key priorities for the future period.

During the first session the participants were introduced to the activities and projects implemented by all individual organizations, including the cooperation with public institutions, other CSOs and the institution of Ombudsman. Some of the representatives included stories from their fieldwork with victims of discrimination - especially vulnerable groups - while the others shared their experience of providing them with legal aid.

The second part focused on future projections and multiple challenges CSOs might face in their work. Ultimately, the participants agreed on the importance of mutual cooperation between CSOs in fight against discrimination in BiH, as well as the role CSOs play in formulating and advocating for change of the current legal framework since, by referring to the practices of other countries, its success depends on the ability of CSOs and other civil society stakeholders to keep the issues of discrimination on the agenda of decision makers.

The “Equality for All: Civil Society Coalition against Discrimination“ project is financed by USAID and Open Society Fund Bosnia and Herzegovina. More information about the AD program is available at: www.diskriminacija.ba.
