International Conference "20 Years of Media Assistance in Western Balkans" Held

Address:

Hotel Europe, Sarajevo, Bosna i Hercegovina

The international conference “20 Years of Media Assistance in Western Balkans” was held in Sarajevo on September 27, 2013 at Hotel Europe.

About 50 participants attended the conference, including representatives of government of Bosnia and Herzegovina, independent researchers, international experts, representatives of civil society, representatives of international and development agencies, academics and media community.

Participants discussed the results of the comparative regional research project that was implemented in 2012 and 2013 by Analitika-Center for Social Research from Bosnia and Herzegovina in cooperation with the Center for Research and Policy Making (CRPM) from Macedonia,  Albanian Media Institute (AMI) from Albania and the Democracy for Development (D4D) from Kosovo. The primary topic of concern was the internationally-led media assistance programs and whether or not they were instrumental for media reforms in the countries of the Western Balkans – Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Macedonia and Serbia – trying to understand the link between deployed assistance strategies and achieved results in the local context. The key conclusion stemming from the research results and the discussions from the conference is that the international media assistance contributed to the liberalization and development of media landscapes of the Western Balkans countries, but the sustainability of the results has been hampered by weak media markets, political pressures, weak rule of law, and a premature reduction of international assistance.

The conference was organized as a part of the project ”Development of Functional Media Institutions in Western Balkans - A Comparative Study“  funded by the  Regional Research Promotion Programme (RRPP) Western Balkans. The RRPP is aimed at fostering and promoting social science research in the Western Balkans (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia). The RRPP is coordinated and operated by the Interfaculty Institute for Central and Eastern Europe (IICEE) at the University of Fribourg (Switzerland). The programme is fully funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), Federal Department of Foreign Affairs.
